MLB Preview: Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals enter the season in a state of transition. The 2019 World Series Championship feels like so long ago as the Nationals enter another season in which they are highly expected to be the last place team in the NL East.  As the team continues to rebuild, the front office prioritized bringing in some lower cost veterans this offseason; including Zach Littell (1 year, $7million) and Foster Griffin (3 years, $5.5million).  The major acquisitions Washington brought in is all for the continued rebuild for the future as they added some of the top prospects in baseball to their farm system (Gavin Fien and Harry Ford).  Most projections place the Nationals in the 60-70 win range and this season isn’t about playoffs but rather testing the young core that was acquired in past trades to see if a new core can be cemented.

MLB Preview: Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins enter the 2026 season following a surprisingly competitive 79-win season in 2025. Though they traded away two valuable starting pitchers (Edward Cabera and Ryan Weathers), they still have their top two in Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez.  Coming back in those trades were some of the top prospects in baseball (Owen Caissie, Dillon Lewis, and Brendan Jones) who could all potentially see some playing time at the major league level this season. In a savvy buy-low move, the front office acquired Esteury Ruiz from the Dodgers, who has great speed, and will provide the Marlins with high-ceiling utility option that is a major threat to steal bases whenever he gets on-base.  The Marlins are hoping to capitalize off their 2025 finish and are pivoting toward a youth-heavy roster in hopes of being a sneaky postseason contender.

MLB Preview: Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves enter 2026 coming off a disappointing season in which injuries snapped their seven-year postseason streak. The front office was uncharacteristically loud this winter, prioritizing defensive stability and bullpen depth to ensure there is no repeat of last year’s collapse.  Unfortunately, the injury bug is already starting to bite Atlanta as one of their key acquisitions, Ha-Seong Kim (1 year, $20million) is expected to be out until May with a torn finger tendon.  Sean Murphy is also recovering from hip surgery and is aiming for a mid-May return. Both Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep are sidelined until the summer after undergoing elbow procedures. The Braves also signed Robert Suarez (3 years, $45million), the former Padres closer, in hopes of shoring up the backend of the bullpen.  To help the lineup, Mike Yastrzemski was added with the plan to platoon in the outfield but will likely become a mainstay with Jurickson Profar serving a season long suspension for PEDs.  Despite the early injuries, the “A” on the cap still represents one of the best rosters in the National League.

MLB Preview: New York Mets

The New York Mets enter the 2026 season with a complete reset of their core group of players. After an agonizing second half collapse in 2025, David Stearns chose to move on from franchise cornerstones Pete Alsonso, Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil.  In their place Stearns brought in a new group of players with the focus being on contact hitting and defense.  The Mets marquee acquisition of Bo Bichette should help replace the right-handed power lost with Alonso and Bichette brings with him a more consistent contact profile.  Marcus Semien was acquired in a trade with Texas for Nimmo and brings with him to New York Gold Glove defense to the middle of the infield.  Freddy Peralta, acquired from Milwaukee, gives the Mets a true ace to the rotation which they have lacked since the days of Jacob deGrom.

MLB Preview: Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies enter the 2026 season with the mentality to “run it back” with the veteran core group of players we’ve seen over the past few seasons. After a 96-win 2025 campaign ended in a disappointing NLDS exit, the front office is betting on this internal group bouncing back, while bringing in a few tactical additions in hopes it will finally push this group over the top.  The most notable acquisition was the signing of Adolis Garcia, to play right field and give the Phillies some more right-handed “pop” in the lineup.  The big internal move is that top prospect Justin Crawford (son of former MLB player Carl Crawford) has officially locked up the center field job and will bring elite speed and defense which should help transform the Phillies’ run prevention.

MLB Preview: Chicago White Sox

After a 2024 season that saw them set the modern-era record for losses, the Chicago White Sox spent 2025 proving they weren’t going to be a punchline. Under manager Will Venable, the White Sox posted a 19-win improvement, finishing with 60 victories and a renewed sense of identity.  The biggest acquisition of the offseason was the signing of Munetaka Murakami (2 years, $34million), the elite Japanese superstar who brings left-handed power to the middle of the order.  Chicago also brought in Seranthony Dominguez (2 years, $20million) to help stabilize the bullpen and Anthony Kay (2 years, $12million) for depth in the rotation.  While not a “move” in the traditional sense, the White Sox officially won the 2026 MLB Draft Lottery, securing the #1 overall pick; which gives them an inside track to draft UCLA SS Roch Cholowsky, the expected pick.  As they head into 2026, the rebuild has shifted into a youth movement and the 121-loss trauma is in the rearview mirror, replaced by an intriguing young lineup.

MLB Preview: Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins enter 2026 under the narrative that this will be a “transition” year. After a 2025 season defined as a mid-summer fire sale and a 70-92 finish, the front office is pivoting away from a total teardown, choosing instead to build around a core of established stars while waiting for a wave of high-end prospects to arrive.  The organization has lowered its payroll significantly, entering the season with a budget ranked near the bottom of the league, which has limited their ability to chase top-tier free agents.  The key offseason acquisitions were the signings of 1B Josh Bell (1-year deal) and C Victor Caratini (2-year deal) to help the lineup.  They also brought back Taylor Rogers who last pitched for Minnesota in 2021.  Perhaps the biggest news was what that Twins decided against trading players such as Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, and Byron Buxton despite the heavy trade rumors which persisted.

MLB Preview: Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals enter the 2026 season in what many believe is a “bridge” year – as the team is caught between the veteran core, which made them a surprise contender in 2024 and a wave of prospects (Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen) ready to take over. After an 82-80 finish last season that saw them narrowly miss the postseason, the front office has doubled down on roster stability and subtle upgrades rather than a total overhaul in hopes that the Royals will contend for the AL Central title this season.  The most significant acquisition KC made during the offseason was signing Lane Thomas (1 year, $5million) to provide a consistent bat in the lineup and help reshape their outfield.  Starling Marte (1 year, $1million) is expected to get some time in the outfield and at DT as a platoon option.  Isaac Colins was acquired from Milwaukee and is expected to compete for significant time in left field.  In addition the Royals made sure to prioritize their core by reaching a 5 year, $57.5million extension with Maikel Garcia and a 2 year extension for Salvador Perez.

MLB Preview: Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers enter the 2026 season with a “World Series or bust” mentality. After make the playoffs in consecutive seasons and falling just short of the ALCS in 2025, the Motor City is buzzing about the potential of this Tigers team.  This offseason was the most aggressive Scott Harris, the General Manager, has been as he brought in an infusion of veteran pitching, including Framber Valez (3 years, $115million) and the returning Justin Verlander (1 year, $13million); while retaining Gleyber Torres ($22.025million qualifying offer).  While the bats remain largely unchanged, the rotation and bullpen underwent a total transformation with the idea that this roster now has the pieces it needs to take the next step towards getting to the World Series.

MLB Season Preview: Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians enter the 2026 season with a clear objective: take the next step towards winning the World Series. After two straight AL Central championships, manager Stephen Vogt’s squad is leaning heavily into continuity and internal growth, hoping that a core group of familiar faces.  The most significant personnel move the Guardians made this winter was securing Jose Ramirez (7 years, $175million) to a contract extension, tying him to Cleveland through 2032.  The other acquisitions targeted depth, specifically in the bullpen, with the plan being that free agency will be used to fill gaps in the roster, while the hope is that the Guardians have a young roster that is ready to mature and turn their continuity into consistent production which leads to a World Series Championship.

MLB Season Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates enter 2026 with a familiar narrative: a top tier pitching rotation looking to carry a revamped lineup toward a playoff berth. The Pirates took a different approach this winter and made specific moves in hopes they can compete in a tough NL Central.  Pittsburgh acquired Brandon Lowe from the Rays in a three-team trade in hopes he can provide significant power to the middle infield.

Cheers to Barry! Trotz calls it a career after 23 years in the NHL

After 23 years in the NHL Barry Trotz has called it a career.  At a press conference this past Monday, Trotz announced he plans to step down as General Manager of the Nashville Predators and retire from his career in hockey once the team finds his successor.  Trotz is best known for serving as head coach of the Nashville Predators for the first 15 years of the franchise’s existence in which he coached nearly 1,200 games; which is an NHL record for most games coached by the first coach of an NHL expansion team.  Even though Nashville failed to reach the postseason in their first five years, they stuck with Trotz and he delivered by guiding them there seven of the next eight season.  He oversaw the development of key players such as David Legwand, Martin Erat, Marek Zidlicky, and Pekka Rinne, while continuing to put forward a competitive team each year.  At the conclusion of the 2013-14 NHL season, the Predators announced that Trotz would not return as head coach; though the team did invite him to work in their hockey operations department he declined as he wanted to continue coaching.

Playoff Drought Over? Is This the Year for the Sabres?

14 years.  That’s how long it’s been since the Buffalo Sabres made the playoffs.  Since April of 2011 when Buffalo blew a 3-2 series lead against the Philadelphia Flyers and were eliminated in seven games in the Conference Quarterfinals they haven’t sniffed the playoffs.  The drought has encapcilated four general managers and seven head coaches (eight if you count Lindy Ruff twice as he was the coach the first year of the drought).  Buffalo started this season 14-14-4 at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings when on December 15th Terry Pagula fired Kevyn Adams and replaced him with Jarmo Kekalainen; who was the General Manager for Columbus for eleven seasons.  Since that decision was made the Sabres have gone on a tear which includes a 20-3-1 record in their last 24 games and currently sit at 67 points; 3rd place in the Atlantic Division.

What Would a Giannis Trade Look Like?

As we approach the NBA Trade Deadline (February 5th, at 3pm ET), the hottest commodity on the market will be Giannis Antetokounmpo.  Since the Greek Freak was drafted back in 2013 by the Milwaukee Bucks he has become one of the tops stars in the league.  He has been blessed with a unique blend of size and athleticism; something we have rarely seen from other players in the history of the NBA.  His length has assisted him developing into a perennial all-NBA defender, capable of guarding multiple position players.  And on top of that he has refined his skills over time developing into one of the best drivers to the basket we have ever seen; which culminated in Milwaukee winning the NBA Finals in 2021.

SuperBowl LX Preview

We’ve finally made it!  Super Bowl LX is here and it will feature two teams nobody expected to hear much from this season (let alone make the playoffs).  The New England Patriots, trying to win their seventh Lombardi trophy, will face off with the Seattle Seahawks, who are competing to win their second.  This is a rematch from Super Bowl XLIX in which the Patriots won 28-24; which of course is remembered for Malcolm Butler’s interception of Russell Wilson’s pass at the 1 yard line to seal the win for New England.  Fast forward over 10 years later, this year’s game will feature two much different teams compared to the ones that played then.  Let’s break down how each team got here, and touch on the expectations they had coming into the season, with a final prediction at the end.
